Sensitively repair and conserve your traditional property, helping it to last for many years to come.
In the complex realm of building conservation, a thorough knowledge of traditional construction methods, sensitive integration of modern techniques and how to navigate the approvals process is key.
Bond McCart has extensive experience in the conservation of traditional and older buildings and we have developed tools to make the process of obtaining listed building and conservation area approvals easier. We continually research conservation repair methods to keep on top of what methods are appropriate for the properties we are engaged to work with.
Why Conservation is Necessary.
Approximately thirty percent of the built environment in the UK predates 1920 and most of these buildings are full of character and play a key role to enhance the beauty of our cities, towns and villages. They are also largely in need of help to continue to play this role. Further to this, the UK government is committed to zero carbon emissions, making it all the more necessary to understand how to retain pre-1920 buildings. Our expert team of architects and surveyors can achieve this aim by devising a conservation plan and overseeing its execution.

Featured Project
Lauderdale House, Camden
London Borough of Camden have asked us on several occasions to assist them with the renovation work at Lauderdale House, and this has involved us in the cyclical maintenance work of this lovely historic building within Waterlow Park, Hampstead.
Conservation emphasises preservation, and prevention, by stabilising the existing structure, protecting it from environmental or structural damage using non-invasive techniques and materials. Restoration involves recreating or repairing elements to bring a structure back to its original state, by replacing missing or damaged parts with materials matching the original, removing later additions that are not historically accurate.
A combination of conservation, and restoration is the ideal. For example, conserving structural elements while restoring decorative features ensures the building is functional, and true to its heritage. This approach allows for thoughtful intervention that respects the building's past while preparing for the future.
We work to conserve buildings which reflects many Local Authority Conservation Officers' ideals, and our approach is based upon the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) philosophy of minimal intervention, and prioritising the preservation of a building's historical integrity and authenticity. The SPAB Approach.
There are always going to be times where intervention is required, whether this be changing how the building should perform, the introduction of insulation materials, or building alterations to extend, or improve the space. We have developed tools to justify our interventions.
Retrofit Design is carried out by retrofit designers who are Chartered Building Surveyors qualified to level 3 in Energy Efficiency Measures for older and traditional buildings.
Their focus is to improve the energy efficiency in older buildings with solid wall construction, by maintaining the vapour permeability (breathability) of the buildings envelope when upgrading the thermal performance of the envelope.
Architects and Building Surveyors work in harmony with conservation projects; the Surveyor understands how traditional buildings perform, and what is required to allow these buildings to perform with the original design intent. Architects transform spaces, and the result provides for a well-maintained, durable building, that is healthy and a joy to live or work in.
