John certainly helped us achieve it. Since the building has been completed, it has become one of the favourite locations for students

We brought to bear our creative home design and conservation skills to remodel the listed townhouse situated on Wellington Square, Hastings.
Number 12 Wellington Square is one of a terrace of townhouses, constructed as single homes in the mid 19th century, with habitable rooms arranged to cater for the era of day servants and nannies. Our client had modern expectations for what they wanted in their new home, including ensuite bathrooms, open plan spaces to increase visibility between separate rooms and enhanced fire safety. The key challenge we identified was to convince the conservation officer that these elements could be incorporated into a listed property.
We consulted with the conservation officer and demonstrated how the listed building could be sensitively adapted, whilst minimising the negative impact on the listed building. The documents we prepared for the listed building application clearly set out our approach and we achieved planning success for all of the modifications our client requested.

‘We were unsure of what could and couldn’t be done with our new home, given its listed status and approached John McCart for advice. What was clear was the fact that the years hadn’t been kind to the house and its former use as offices left us with awkward and inappropriate spaces for a family dwelling. John steered us through the design, planning and execution stages in a friendly and professional manner. We are thoroughly please with the end result!’ – Nicola Mairs
